Ski Hire, Lift Passes & Lessons in Bansko: How to Organise Everything Before You Arrive

Once you’ve booked your ski holiday to Bansko, the next job is sorting out the skiing itself.

Do you need to buy your lift pass in advance? Where should you hire skis? Should beginners pre-book lessons? And how much of it can you organise before you arrive?

The good news is that Bansko is relatively straightforward – particularly if you arrange the essentials in advance.

Here’s how it all works.

Do You Need a Lift Pass in Bansko?

Yes. You’ll need a lift pass to use the gondola and ski lifts within the Bansko ski area. For non-skiers it is possible to buy a pedestrian pass so you can take the gondola up, and there are restaurants you can easily get to on foot.

Most guests staying for a week buy a six-day lift pass, although passes are available for different durations if you’re skiing for fewer days.

The price varies according to age, with reduced rates for infants, children, students and pensioners.

One thing worth knowing is that Bansko’s prices are usually announced relatively close to the winter season. But as a guide, in winter 2025-26, an adult pass was €341 for 6 days.

It’s a small thing, but after travelling to Bulgaria the day before, it’s rather nice to be able to have breakfast, grab your ski gear and head for the mountain.

Should You Book Ski Hire Before Arriving in Bansko?

We recommend it.

There are plenty of ski and snowboard rental shops in Bansko, so you certainly won’t struggle to find equipment. However, pre-booking means you can choose a reliable rental provider rather than simply walking into whichever shop you happen to see first.

It’s particularly worth arranging equipment in advance during busy weeks such as Christmas, New Year and February half term.

Typical equipment packages include:

• skis, boots and poles
• snowboard and boots
• helmets if required
• different grades of equipment depending on your ability and preferences

Your equipment is fitted once you arrive in Bansko, so you don’t need to know your exact ski or boot size before travelling.

We usually recommend doing this on arrival afternoon or evening rather than waiting until your first ski morning. That way, everything is ready and you can get onto the mountain without losing skiing time.

Our preferred rental shops are close to the gondola and also offer overnight equipment storage, so you don’t necessarily have to carry skis and boots backwards and forwards every day.

How Much Does Ski Hire Cost in Bansko?

One of Bansko’s advantages is that equipment hire remains relatively inexpensive compared with many larger Alpine resorts.

As a guide, six days of adult skis, boots and poles can start from around €80, depending on the equipment level and provider.

Should Beginners Book Ski Lessons in Bansko?

Definitely.

Bansko is a particularly good resort for learning to ski or snowboard, and lessons are considerably more affordable than in many French, Swiss or Austrian resorts.

The instructors we work with speak English, and there are options for both adults and children.

You can choose between:

• group lessons
• private lessons
• skiing or snowboarding
• beginner lessons
• improver lessons for people who can already ski but want more confidence or better technique

If you have never skied before, we wouldn’t recommend trying to teach yourself – or relying on a friend or partner to teach you.

A proper instructor will help you learn safely, understand how the equipment works and build good technique from the beginning.

It also tends to make the holiday considerably more enjoyable for everyone involved!

Group Lessons or Private Lessons?

Both can work well.

Group lessons are usually the most economical choice and can also be sociable, particularly if you’re travelling alone, as a couple or in a small group.

Private lessons cost more but give you much more individual attention.

They can be especially worthwhile if:

• you already ski but want to improve a particular part of your technique
• you’re nervous and would prefer individual support
• you’re returning to skiing after a long break
• several people in your group are at roughly the same level and want to share an instructor

For complete beginners staying for a week, several days of lessons usually makes much more sense than having one short lesson and then trying to manage alone.

What About Children’s Ski Lessons?

Bansko is very popular with families, and children’s lessons are widely available.

Depending on their age and ability, children can join group ski school or have private tuition.

If you’re travelling during school holidays, we strongly recommend arranging children’s lessons well in advance.

February half term in particular is one of Bansko’s busiest weeks and the best instructors and lesson times can fill up.

When booking through Total Chalets, just tell us the ages of the children, whether they have skied before and roughly what level they’re at. We can advise on the most appropriate options.

What If Something Changes During the Week?

Ski holidays don’t always go exactly to plan.

You might decide you’d like another lesson. Someone may want to change their equipment. A beginner might progress faster than expected. Or you may simply have a question about where you need to be the following morning.

That means there is someone local to ask rather than having to work everything out yourself.

You don’t need to plan every minute of your Bansko ski holiday before leaving home.

But there are three things we recommend organising in advance:

3. Your lessons, if you need them

Doing that removes most of the first-day admin and is particularly important during peak ski weeks.
