10 reasons why people love skiing in Andorra

Andorran resorts offer some of the best (and most affordable!) ski trips in Europe and here are the top reasons why!

1. PRICE

Andorra is much more affordable than the Alps, with a beer in the village costing €3.50 and a meal with wine costing around €20. On the slopes, lunch with a drink is around €15 Euros per person and a hot chocolate is around €4.
Andorra is also a duty free enclave, and with the capital Andorra la Vella just a bus or taxi ride away, there are some great shopping opportunities too!

2. SNOW

Most of the 210kms of piste that make up the Grandvalira ski area are above 2000m, with Pas de la Casa and Soldeu being among the most snow sure. Grandvalira has also heavily invested in over 1000 snow cannons, which cover around 65% of the slopes to offer guaranteed skiing in many areas.

3. VARIETY

The Grandvalira ski area comprises of six separate ski areas; Pas De La Casa, Grau Roig, Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo and Encamp all linked together to form the largest ski area in the Pyreneese. This epic ski zone spreads over such a huge area that there are plenty of varied runs for you to explore and enjoy over your holiday.  The terrain is varied, with tree runs, open valleys, bowls and off piste with a large number of black, red, blue and green runs.
Best of all, this is all accessed with a single ski pass costing just €250 per adult for 6 days!

4. ACTIVITIES

It’s not all about skiing in Grandvalira, you can also find snowmobile rides through the forests in both Soldeu and Grau Roig, dog-sledding in El Tarter and Grau Roig and snowshoeing across snow-covered roads and icy lakes in Canillo, El Tarter and Grau Roi. Thrill-seekers can also try tubbing – sliding down slopes in a tube – in Grau Roig, or the 40-metre zip line in Canillo.

5. QUALITY SKI SCHOOLS

Grandvalira is excellent for beginners and families, with plenty of areas that are great for building confidence and improving technique, especially Canillo which has mainly quiet, gentle blue runs.
There are some fantastic ski schools available, with group lessons costing around 140 Euros for 5 days (3 hours per day).

6. ADVANCED & FREESTYLE

Grandvalira isn’t just for beginners, there are some challenging black runs too as well as 3 freestyle parks and plenty of off-piste. One of the freestyle parks, ‘Sunset Park Peretol’ is located immediately next to Chalet Hotel Peretol and is floodlit and open each afternoon until 10pm. There are views over the park from the terrace at Chalet Hotel Peretol and it’s exciting to watch people in the Sunset Park, including many local pro-riders who regularly come to practice. Access to the park is included in the area lift pass.

7. CONVENIENCE

With plenty of flight options to Barcelona and Toulouse, Grandvalira is easy to get to from the UK with low cost carriers. The resort is also well set up to offer everything you’ll need all on the doorstep, from great skiing, lively apres-ski, spa centres, shops and restaurants.

8. WEATHER

With an average of 300 days of sunshine, Grandvalira is ranked as one of the sunniest ski areas in Europe. There are plenty of terraces on the slopes where you can take a break from skiing and bask in the sunshine with a beer or hot chocolate in your hand!

9. CHILDREN’S FACILITIES

There are 4 creches available in the Grandvalira ski area, in Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu and Grau Roig. They take children from 1 to 4 years of age, so parents can enjoy the slopes while the little ones have fun at the creche.

10. APRES-SKI

Last but not least, the 6 villages that make up Grandvalira each offer their own style of apres-ski, so there is something for everyone. Whether you want to chill on a sunny terrace in a hammock, listen to live music, play pool and watch Sky Sports, or party hard until the small hours, you’ll find it all in Grandvalira.
